I have been following pretty closely the West Virginia mining disaster that claimed the lives of 29 coal miners. A horrible loss and, from all accounts, a preventable one also. The company responsible, MasseyEnergy, has just announced the benefits it will provide the families. Read about it here.
Obviously, it is important that Massey take responsibility for the harm that it caused these families and this community. While Massey can replace income, it's benefit package does not account for the emotional losses suffered by the families: All the wives who have lost the love and support of their husbands; the children who have lost the love and guidance of their fathers; and, mothers and fathers who have lost their sons.
